GIS Technologist with York Region

The team is strongly customer-service oriented, empowered and charged to provide high-value insights to local government programs and services. The team works in quick iterations, using a collaborative approach with the techniques and tools best suited for solving challenging problems.
York Region is looking for a GIS Technologist with strengths in data visualization, web cartography, graphic design and written communication. You are a ‘’data storyteller’ that can develop compelling web products that fuse multimedia with data visualizations to attract, engage and excite users to ultimately amplify participation in civic matters at York Region.
This position will collaborate to deliver on projects, advance data visualization and cartographic practices, and deliver training and other learning events. The position will contribute to the continual improvements in program planning, service delivery, and business operations.
You will design and deliver rich products – data visualizations and stories – by thoughtfully creating and assembling compelling visualizations with multimedia carried by a narrative to engage and inspire a diverse user community in York Region. You are curious and persistent – working with the team to seek facts in data. You will author narratives to explain data and design/build visuals that enlighten users to the patterns in data.
You will also be required to produce product suitable to print and advance the integration of rich content on traditional websites and into social media channels.
You will work in independently, in small teams and cross-functional teams depending on the nature of the project. You will lead or contribute to product development projects leveraging existing content, creating new multimedia content, and/or sourcing supportive content that advances program capabilities. You will prototype, develop, document and support web products that can employ diverse sources of data.
You will consult with communications teams and business program areas to inspire the uptake in use of data stories for communication plans. You will develop learning materials and deliver learning events that strengthen organizational capacity on exploiting data.
You have an undergraduate degree in University Degree in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Environmental Science complemented with communications or marketing skills, plus one (1) year of pertinent working experience. You have demonstrated experience with data visualization techniques coupled with mapping (i.e. GIS) and publishing content on the web. You have talent in taking robust data to simple messages. You are keen to develop and share best practices with business units across a wide range of disciplines.
Demonstrated experience providing ‘analytic translation’ – providing a clear and inspiring approach to convey meaning from data coupled with visuals and narrative. Skilled at presenting data simply and building creative output in order to turn complex challenges into easy to understand formats. Demonstrated leadership and facilitation skills with a proven ability to manage multiple projects. Ability to interact with clients, staff, management and senior executives to advance business understanding through data stories.
Strong verbal and written communication skills, including report writing, presenting and storytelling. Demonstrated ability and willingness to develop strong relationships and work in a collaborative, integrated manner. Strong knowledge of and experience with a variety of presentation, graphic design applications, and tools.
