Nova Scotia Department of Lands and Forestry
As the Forestry GIS Programmer / Analyst, you will be the technical lead on the forest information systems required to support Forest research, management, and planning initiatives.
You will be responsible for designing, building, and administering GIS tools and processes to collect, maintain and provide access to forest management and research information within the Department of Lands and Forestry in collaboration with other IT and forestry professionals. The design and management of supporting database systems will be part of your responsibilities.
You will use your GIS programming skills to develop scripts, tools, and interfaces to automate the collection, processing and quality control of digital information submitted for various departmental initiatives. You will design and complete routine quality control procedures on information entered into forestry databases and ensure that the database meets applicable specifications and standards. Within the Forestry Division, you will work closely with the Forest Management and Planning Section, the Forest Inventory Section and the Regional Services Branch as well as forestry stakeholder groups.
Qualifications and Experience
This may be the right opportunity for you if you have a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant Geomatics field along with 5 years related experience or graduation from an approved technical school in the field of geomatics with 8 years related experience; an equivalent combination of training and experience may be acceptable.
This position requires the following:
- Work experience developing GIS related tools using a modern programing language such as C# or Visual Basic.
- Work experience programming using the Python scripting language.
- Training or experience in applying complex SQL commands to a modern fully relational database.
