Newfoundland and Labrador is the most easternmost Canadian province on the Atlantic coast. The province’s population (As of January 2010) is estimated to be about 510,900 and approximately 94% of that population resides on the Island of Newfoundland, and almost 190,000 of those people live in the city of St.John’s ( 20th largest metropolitan area in Canada).
St. John’s has experienced a long and prosperous history in the fishery industry over the last 50 some years, that has transformed into a more modern export and service center, famed for its nightlife and rich culture. It has become the seventh fastest growing metropolitan area in Canada recently thanks to the discovery of rich oil fields that has created an economic boom spurring population growth and commercial development. Newfoundland and Labrador may of at one time been a place where people never looked for GIS jobs but thanks to recent economic changes people are finally moving back for such high-tech jobs.
